a sesame street special

Al Roker, Deborah Roberts and Elmo Host Original Special Featuring Jean Chatzky. Premiering September 9 at 8 pm ET/ PT on PBS
i don't think we can't go to see 9 anymore.
we go on 9.11.09.
In today’s economic climate, approximately two out of three middle class families are at high risk of sustaining or losing their economic security[1]. Moreover, increases in job loss and income cuts have made families struggle with basic costs like housing, medical care, transportation, food, clothing, and child care. Too often, parents are being forced to make difficult decisions that affect their children’s well-being. In response to these recent changes in family economics, Sesame Street is producing, in association with David Letterman’s production company Worldwide Pants Incorporated and Lookalike Productions, a new PBS primetime special, Families Stand Together: Feeling Secure in Tough Times. This hour-long HD special, hosted by Al Roker, Deborah Roberts and Elmo, aims to help families with children, ages two to eight, experiencing difficult economic circumstances by offering strategies and tips that can lead to positive outcomes for their children’s physical and emotional well-being during this tough economic climate. The announcement was made by Miranda Barry, Executive Vice President, Creative for Sesame Workshop and Sesame Street’s Grover at the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, CA.
The special will air on PBS on September 9, 2009 at 8PM EST (check local listings). This initiative is made possible by the generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
Featuring Sesame Street’s Grover, Chris, Elmo’s family and financial expert Jean Chatzky and parenting and relationship expert Dr. Joshua Coleman, Families Stand Togetherprovides simple strategies and helpful tips that can easily be integrated into families’ everyday routines. The special includes documentary footage of real American families who are living through difficult economic conditions, encouraging positive strategies and modeling behavior for parents and care providers to support the entire family during insecure times. The special is part of a two-hour economy-focused block of programming on PBS which also includes WNED’s Your Life, Your Money aimed at young adults hosted by Donald Faison.
“For nearly 40 years, Sesame Workshop and our beloved Sesame Street Muppets have addressed educational and community needs through the creative use of media. We have never shied away from delving into deep and complex issues and finding accessible and age appropriate ways to talk about these issues with children and families,” said Gary E. Knell, President and CEO, Sesame Workshop. “We are grateful to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for acknowledging our goals with their generous funding of the television special Families Stand Together and additional resources for our families. And we are grateful for the bravery of these families depicted on the show who tell their very personal stories so others can learn from their journeys.”
“CPB is a proud partner with Sesame Workshop on behalf of the nation's families and children at a time of great economic uncertainty,” said Pat Harrison, President and CEO of CPB. “The impact of financial loss undermining family stability is taking its toll on children and we applaud Gary Knell and Sesame Workshop for recognizing the need and committing to help.”
“In these difficult financial times, we find that parents often lack the words to explain what is going on to their children and that prevents them from having the necessary conversations,” said Jean Chatzky. “Working with Sesame Workshop, we’re able to give the families in the special — and the many others watching from home — the tools they need.”
Beyond the primetime special, Sesame Workshop will extend the initiative by providing additional resources online, in print and into local communities to help guide families during these tough times. Sesame Workshop will work with PBS stations in 32 key markets to promote community screenings and to deliver 200,000 bi-lingual educational outreach kits nationwide beginning October 15, 2009.
The materials will consist of:
A bi-lingual (English/Spanish) outreach kit with a DVD featuring documentary moments of families as well as content to help children and families talk about the feelings and stresses during economic insecurity.
A printed children’s story which offers support and strategies for families during economic transitions.
A parent/caregiver guide which provides strategies on how to meet challenges as a family, ideas about how to explain difficult situations to young children, and tips on planning for the short- and long-term.
Resources and materials will be available online at www.sesameworkshop.org/toughtimes beginning September 9, 2009 so that families everywhere can view the videos and download the information.
DINO-MITE NEW SEASON OF Barney & friends™ TO LAUNCH ON PBS KIDS® IN SEPTEMBER

HIT Entertainment, a leading provider of quality preschool entertainment, in association with THIRTEEN, announces the launch of a new season of Barney & Friends™ on PBS KIDS this fall. Barney & Friends, a core series on PBS KIDS since 1992, introduces ten new episodes beginning September 7th (check local listings). The new series follows the theme of “Friends and Family Around the World,” and in each episode, Barney and friends travel to various countries to experience having fun with new friends in different cultures.
In addition to the new episodes, PBS KIDS will debut the all-new special, “Barney Jungle Friends”. This one-hour special will air throughout the month of September beginning on September 2nd (check local listings) in conjunction with its September release on DVD (Lionsgate). Children will join Barney, BJ and Baby Bop as they laugh, dance and sing through an enchanted rainforest and learn about all of the amazing plants, animals and insects that call the rainforest their home in this one-of-a-kind musical Jungle adventure!
As always, the series will address important qualities, such as sharing, caring, imagining, exploring, good manners, dancing and learning that are defining characteristics of the Barney experience.
New Episodes of the Emmy-Award winning series include:
#1301 — Bienvenido, Barney! (Mexico)Theme: Separation/Learning About Other Cultures Baby Bop’s friend Monty the butterfly stops by the park for a visit on their way to Mexico. When Monty gets left behind by his insect friends and family, Barney takes everyone on a visit to Mexico where Baby Bop reluctantly says good-bye to her butterfly friend and learns a lesson about loving and letting go.
#1302 — Big Brother Rusty (China)Theme: A New Sibling/Exploring Other Cultures Barney’s excited to find out that Rusty’s family is adopting a new baby girl from China; however, Rusty is apprehensive for several reasons. He’s not sure if he’s going to be a good brother, and he doesn’t feel like he knows enough about China. To help Rusty, Barney takes him, BJ and Baby Bop on an adventure to China where he can learn more about his new sister’s heritage. They meet Su-Chin, their happy host, who is celebrating the first day of the Chinese New Year. By the time he returns to the park, Rusty is excited to meet his new baby sister and realizes he will be the best big brother ever
#1303 — Ahora Mismo! (Spain)Theme: Delayed Gratification Ben is late to the park and is disappointed to realize he missed his chance at riding a real pony. He has waited his whole life for this, and now it looks as if he’s missed his opportunity. Luckily, Barney takes him to Spain where they meet Regalo, a dancing horse! Ben and Barney return to the park just in time for Ben to ride the pony after all! Ben is thrilled to ride a horse and learned an important lesson about patience and waiting.
#1304 — Venice, Anyone? (Italy)Theme: Tackling a Big Task; Exploring New Cultures; Learning About Family Emma can’t play with her friends because she has to complete a school project about her family. While working on the project, Emma discovers that her great granddad was from Venice, Italy. This gives Barney a great idea…what would be a better way to learn about Venice, than to travel there! By the time they return to the park, Emma has learned about her family first hand, and is eager to tackle her big school project.
#1305 — Sweeter Than Candy (Greece)Theme: It’s Easy to Want Too Much Barney, Baby Bop and BJ are helping the kids get ready for a school play. Barney tells everyone that putting on shows began in Greece. Of course, the little dinos and kids want to visit the country, so off they go! While there, they meet some Greek friends and decide to put on a play in an amphitheatre. Barney knows a great story that originated in Greece called “King Midas.” By the end of the day, everyone has learned that wanting too much is not a good thing, especially BJ!
#1306 — The Music Box (Switzerland)Theme: Growing Up/Responsibility The kids are having a yard sale and getting rid of old toys, books and clothes. Kioko shows up holding a prized possession—a music box from Switzerland. By accident, Ben includes the music box in a box of yard sale items, and the music box is sold! Kioko is sad and Ben feels horrible! Ben wants to do something to make things right, so Barney suggests they travel to Switzerland to find Kioko another music box. While there, they sample Swiss food, customs and games—but they can’t find a music box! Ben’s sadness quickly turns to happiness when they return to the park and realize the music box has been returned! Ben and the others had a tee-riffic day in Switzerland and learned a valuable lesson about responsibility and friendship along the way.
#1307 — The Good Egg (Kenya)Theme: Curiosity/Imagination When the kids find a mysterious, colorful egg in the park, Barney takes them on a trip to Kenya to try to find out what kind of animal laid the egg. While in Kenya, they meet Ayira who introduces them to the many people, cultures and animals of Kenya!
#1308 — A Bird of a Different Feather (Hawaii)Theme: Learning New Things Barney takes the kids to Hawaii on a quest for a bird of paradise. While there, they meet a couple of Hawaiian friends, learn new Hawaiian words, make a Hawaiian lei and dance a hula! Eventually, Barney and his friends find a bird of paradise, but it’s not quite what they were expecting!
#1309 — Bonjour Barney! (France)Theme: Creativity Emma wants to paint an award-winning painting for the “Art In The Park Show” and Barney takes her to France to learn how to paint from his friend Pierre. While there, they learn about France and how to paint by following your heart!
#1310 — Home Sweet Earth (Rainforest)Theme: Caring for the EnvironmentIt’s Earth Day, a great time for everyone to learn how to help take care of our world. With Barney’s help, the children meet Mother Nature and some animal friends on a trip to the real rainforest. As Earth Day comes to an end, Barney reminds us all that taking good care of our Earth is the natural thing to do for the people we love.

The Muppets Sing a Christmas Classic with Andrea Bocelli

Bocelli, who has sold 65-million albums to date, is currently in the studio with Kermit and pals recording a cover of "Jingle Bells" for his upcoming Christmas-themed album.
The album, set for release this November, is expected to contain Bocelli's interpretations of "White Christmas", "Silent Night", "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Oh Holy Night" and others; plus appearances by such stars as Natalie Cole and Mary J Blige.
The idea to sing with the Muppets was inspired by an appearance Bocelli made on Sesame Street in 2005 singing "Time To Say Goodnight" with Elmo. It was the amusing Sesame Street footage, which can be found on Sesame Street's YouTube channel, that gave Bocelli's team the idea for recording "Jingle Bells" with The Muppets.
I will be sure to keep you updated with more details of this upcoming holiday collaboration and release as soon as more information becomes available.
